FORT CARSON, Colo. — Today’s society is about self-improvement. TV and radio stations show many ways for people to “improve” their lives, fitness and financial situation by earning degrees, attending the latest and greatest exercise class or playing the lottery. The Army has also addressed self-improvement with the Total Soldier Enhancement Training (TSET).
Earlier this month, leaders with 4th Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, attended a team building TSET class taught by Staff Sgt. Jermaine Hodge, wrestling coach assigned to the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), Installation Management Command (IMCOM). A group of Soldier-athletes from WCAP instructed the 4th SB leaders on boxing techniques, taekwondo, wrestling, agility drills, strength drills and proper running form.
“This program that we developed here at WCAP helps us to impart our knowledge and our abilities to the warfighter,” said Capt. Bryce E. Livingston, commander, WCAP. “Ultimately, the real mission is to fight and win our nation’s wars. We have a different mission here, but the opportunity to impact the Soldiers is what this is all about.”
The Soldier-athletes at WCAP helped motivate Soldiers to be better.

“This is a great workout that kept our heart increased the entire time,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Phelicea M. Redd, brigade senior enlisted leader, 4th SB. “It’s great for high intensity training that breaks up the monotony of just going to the gym to lift weights or always going out running.”
The TSET program is designed to test Soldiers’ physical and mental resiliency by pushing them through a 90-minute high intensity workout. TSET helps Soldiers to be well-rounded and ready as well as to prepare for Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) training.
“This training would be beneficial to all Soldiers,” said Master Sgt. Lamar T. Pryor, operations sergeant major, 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th SB. “If units added this class to their physical training, it would help Soldiers be more prepared for the new (ACFT).”
The Soldiers at WCAP look forward to assisting companies with their training in the coming months.
“We motivate the Soldiers to push beyond their comfort zones,” Livingston said. “We can usually train around 40 Soldiers at one time per session within the confines of our facility. We also tailor other types of TSETs, like running clinics, combatives clinics or however we can help the Soldiers.”
