Commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson

This Memorial Day we commemorate the lives of our service members, men and women, who gave their last full measure of devotion to defend the U.S. Constitution and the American way of life. Through our service, we gain a solemn responsibility to honor those men and women who died to protect our nation and their Families. I also encourage everyone this long weekend to reflect on the distinguished history of the U.S. Army and the enduring legacy of the 4th Infantry Division.

We honored the sacrifices of Fort Carson’s Fallen Soldiers and their Families during our annual Mountain Post Warrior Memorial Ceremony May 26, 2016. These 395 Soldiers selflessly volunteered to serve their country in a time of conflict. They were steadfast in their duties and loyal to their country, units and brothers and sisters in arms. They answered the call to serve and put themselves in harm’s way to protect the nation, our way of life and the Families and friends that they loved.

They are a reminder for all of us that the cost of freedom is high. Their sacrifices will always be remembered by their fellow Soldiers and a grateful nation.

Please take the time to revere and honor those who have gone before us. Gather your Family and friends in the commemoration of those who sacrificed their lives in service, but please do so safely. The 4th Infantry Division must always remain ready for our nation’s call, and we cannot do this without you in our formation.

Our people are what make this organization among the best in the Army. The 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson provide the best the Army has to offer in Soldier and Family care, but it is our civilians, Families, Soldiers and volunteers who truly make this organization great.

And let us not forget our 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson Soldiers deployed to the Middle East and Europe. I urge each of you to keep our Soldiers serving in harm’s way always in your thoughts and prayers.

Also, thank you to the Families of our Soldiers as well as our civilian support personnel. It is only with your strength and care that we remain prepared to fight and win, whenever and wherever we are called.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and it is our solemn duty to pay tribute to the men and women who sacrificed all so that we might continue to enjoy the freedoms of this great nation. Our steadfast service every day honors these heroes and keeps their memories alive. Your courage, pride, selfless service and dedication to duty ensures that their sacrifices were not in vain.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to commemorate this day with you and to remember and honor these heroes.

Steadfast and Loyal.
