By Maj. Gen. Ryan F. Gonsalves
Commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson
April is designated Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. This year the Army’s theme is “Sexual Assault. Sexual Harassment. Not in Our Army.” While we recognize the efforts to prevent sexual assault and sexual harassment in April, make no mistake, this theme must endure year-round as a commitment from every member of the Fort Carson and 4th Infantry Division team.
Sexual harassment and sexual assault go against every one of our Army Values. The American people send their sons and daughters to serve with the expectation that we will protect, develop and train them to fight and win our nation’s wars. The American public looks to us as a disciplined force that must not fail in this mission.
Commanders must be engaged in preventing sexual violence and protecting those who come forward to report or as a witness. We expect our leaders to set and enforce standards. Leaders will provide compassionate care for victims, protect rights of the accused and hold offenders appropriately accountable.
Everyone has a personal responsibility to intervene, act and motivate others to prevent sexual harassment/assault. We encourage everyone to take time to participate in the awareness and prevention activities within their commands and on post this month. Together, we can and we must prevent sexual harassment/assault before it occurs.
Steadfast and Loyal.
