COLORADO SPRINGS — Fort Carson Soldiers got up bright and early Jan. 22. 2016, to serve the community at the Springs Rescue Mission in Colorado Springs.

Eight Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, were ready to assist at 5:30 a.m. as they split into teams with various duties to include cleaning, setting tables, preparing food and serving food to those in need.

“My group was in charge of chopping potatoes and vegetables for lunch and dinner,” said Sgt. Anthony Paige, orderly room NCO, Company C, 4th BSB. “We prepared for all the meals and finished serving breakfast by 9 a.m.”

The Soldiers served breakfast to three groups of about 50 people.

“This is the first time our group has done this,” said Capt. Kimberly Hall, chaplain, 4th BSB. “We call it ‘Duty Day with God,’ and the purpose is to promote and enhance resiliency and spiritual fitness through service.”

Springs Rescue Mission is a local facility that provides free food, clothing and shelter to those in need and offers many free programs for families and individuals in need.

“Overall, it was an extremely rewarding experience and I can’t wait to volunteer again,” said Pfc. Ashley Smith, medic, HHC, 4th BSB.
