FORT CARSON, Colo. — The 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, is a day the U.S. reflects on and pays tribute to the victims of 9/11 and all who’ve sacrificed their lives in defense of America and freedom.

The shared experience of the tragic day in American history unified Americans who supported Soldiers, Army civilians and Families.

Just two years following the attacks, the Iraq War began, inspiring men and women from across the country to answer the nation’s call and serve their country valiantly.

As the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, is deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve during the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Soldiers in the same formation from different generations continue to serve decades later.

“When we take a closer look at the age disparity between the Soldiers in our ranks, we can see that many of our young Soldiers were toddlers, infants or not even born yet, during 9/11,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jerry Higley, senior enlisted adviser, 1st SBCT. “It is refreshing to see men and women of all backgrounds continue to serve this great nation and remain ready to deploy, fight and win decisively against any adversary, anytime and anywhere.”

The Army’s long history of defending America through strong leadership has granted young Soldiers the ability to instill confidence in themselves and ultimately recognize their calling.

“I actually enlisted on 9/11 last year,” said 22-year-old Pvt. Carlos Pabon, cavalry scout, with Bravo Troop, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st SBCT. “I didn’t realize it at first, but I was soon reminded by my recruiter of the date. It was at that moment I understood the significance of not only volunteering to serve my country on 9/11, but also the impact I would be able to make on my friends and Family back home.”

Pabon, only six months into his service, has been given the opportunity to make that impact he set out to, while also remaining steadfast to the Army and the oath he took to defend his nation. The very same oath men and women swore to uphold 20 years ago following the tragic events of 9/11.

The lives of those who were lost will never be forgotten. The events of 9/11 and the “War on Terror” have only strengthened America’s resolve and commitment to remain vigilant and ready to meet any challenge.
